OFFICER CHARLES F. LEHMAN

On July 21, 1872, two months after assuming office, Charles Lehman was called to a disturbance at the Anaheim Brewery on Center Street involving two men arguing about a card game.  One of the men was Deputy City Marshal David Davies, the other man was known only as “Horton.”

As Lehman arrived on scene and tried to intervene to settle the quarrel, a gunfight erupted between Davies and Horton.  Marshal Lehman was caught in the crossfire and shot.  On July 23, 1872 at 7:30 p.m., Marshal Charles F. Lehman died at the age of 44, becoming the first Anaheim Law Enforcement Officer to die in the line of duty.

OFFICER GARY ANTHONY NELSON

EOW: August 15, 1975

Officer Gary Nelson died Aug. 15, 1975 in a helicopter accident while assisting detectives during a surveillance operation of a known narcotics dealer. The crash occurred in a rugged area near Idyllwild. Officer Robert DePartee was an observer in the helicopter and was seriously injured. He recovered and later returned to serve as a helicopter pilot.

Officer Nelson had been employed with the Anaheim Police Department for 11 years, and was survived by his wife, son and daughter.

ROBERT TERRELL ROULSTON

EOW: October 16, 1988

Officer Robert Roulston was killed in a motorcycle accident when he struck a vehicle which made a left turn in front of him as he approached an intersection. He was working a special assignment at a California Rams football game at the Anaheim Stadium at the time of the incident. No charges were filed against the driver who caused the accident.

Officer Roulston was survived by his wife, son, brother and sister.
